From Barcelona to Brussels: BREATH EU Project joins European Dialogue on Research Careers

The BREATH EU Project is officially on the move — from Barcelona to Brussels — taking its mission to strengthen research careers in health innovation to the European stage.

The journey began with active participation in a two-day meeting hosted by EIT Food as part of the CROSS Project, where BREATH representatives engaged with sister initiatives, policymakers, and stakeholders to co-create solutions from the very start of the project.

Representing BREATH, Begoña Miñarro Vivas and Mireia Manent Blanch contributed to panel discussions and hands-on workshops focused on the future of research careers in Europe.

Co-Creating Sustainable Research Career Pathways

The meeting highlighted several shared priorities across European projects working on research and innovation careers, including:

  • The importance of raising awareness early about diverse career paths available after a PhD.
  • The potential to diversify academic profiles—such as professors, researchers, and knowledge transfer experts—drawing on successful models already implemented in countries like the UK.
  • The growing relevance of transferable skills, communication, and collaboration for researchers transitioning beyond academia.
  • The need for structured mentoring and career guidance to support PhD candidates in professional development, from CV building to networking and communication.

Strengthening Collaboration Across Sectors

One of the key takeaways from the event was the value of open dialogue between academia, industry, and policymakers. These interactions help overcome stereotypes, build mutual trust, and identify shared needs and opportunities — all essential for creating long-lasting and effective research career ecosystems.
